How to Measure a Packaging Sleeve

Step-by-step instructions for measuring the length, width and height of your product for a custom sleeve, with clearance tips.

How length, width, and height are measured on a boxLengthWidthHeight
  • A belly band wrapped around a box

    Belly band: length and height

  • A box sleeve sliding over a box

Box sleeve: length, width and height

A flat wrap needs two measurements. A sleeve that goes around a box needs three.
  1. 1

Measure the product's footprint (length and width)

With the product sitting the way it will inside the sleeve, measure the longest side (length) and the side perpendicular to it (width) at the widest point. For a belly band around a folded item, measure the full distance around the fold instead - this becomes the band's length when it's unfolded flat.

  2. 2

    Measure the height

Measure straight up from the base to the top of the product or its inner tray/box. For a sleeve with a window, measure to the top of whatever should be visible through the window, not just the product's tallest point.

  3. 3

Add clearance, don't use exact measurements

A sleeve needs to slide on and off without tearing. Add about 1/8 inch (3mm) to length and width for a snug fit, or up to 1/4 inch (6mm) if the product will be inserted and removed repeatedly (like a reusable tray sleeve).

  4. 4

Note anything that changes the shape

A window cutout, a hang tab, or a tear strip all need extra board beyond the base wrap dimensions. Mention these when requesting a quote, or use the calculator's finish and style options so they're accounted for automatically.

  5. 5

    Send us your measurements

Enter your length, width, and height into the price calculator on any style page, or include them in your quote request. If a size doesn't fit a standard sleeve well, our team will suggest an alternative at no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm measuring for a belly band, not a boxed sleeve?

A belly band's "length" is the full distance around the folded item (its girth), not the item's longest edge - measure with a flexible tape wrapped around the fold, then add the clearance in step 3 above.

Do I need to account for label thickness or existing packaging?

Yes - measure over anything the sleeve will sit on top of, including an inner label, tray, or box, not the bare product.

What units do you use?

All of our tools and quotes use inches by default. Let us know if you'd prefer millimeters and we'll convert for you.
